The packaging was difficult to get into, which is a good thing, though I would have liked some closure on the inner plastic bag. I was quite concerned when I first opened the bag though, because all I could smell was a nasty chemical odor. The raw rice didn't smell much like basmati either, it smelled a bit like that chemical odor from the bag itself. I loved how long and perfect the rice grains looked though, pearly and almost luminescent. Breakage occurs of course, but most were just gloriously long. The rice really showed off its true character after I washed it and soaked it. It became just wondrously fragrant, delicate, individual, and so delicious I ate it plain. Not a hint of that chemical smell at all. I've tried several varieties of basmati, some better than others - but this is by far the best I've tried yet. If your rice doesn't smell like basmati eau de toilette initially, don't be put off by first impressions, nobody eats raw rice (I would hope). I would strongly recommend buying large quantities, as you'll find yourself making a LOT of rice once you taste this brand.
