Iowindian Delight!Being from the heartland, and a relatively small area, we suffer from cultural foods outside Mexican, Asian, and 'MERICAN food. We had one Indian Food location within an hour and a half, and one day they closed, leaving a void in my stomach and soul where the delicious spices, flavors, and smells of Indian Cuisine were supposed to go. Then I discovered Jyoti's wonderful line of options in a grocery store here and instantly bought them up. For several months i basked in the glory of having a great (though not as awesome as the place that made it fresh) lunch item. Then again, the store stopped carrying it and was again robbed of my favorite lunchie munchie. So finally, I turned my hopes and dreams to Amazon and found them again. After my past track record, I started buying it by the case. But now, on the the product itself.When first opening one of these, I honestly had a big "yikes..." face as it is not the most visually appealing thing to see once it has settled and you open the can to gaze upon the yellow bumpy glob with orange oil slowly swirling its way around the can like a tiny Nascar track. But, the aromatic scent is of tradiational Indian fare and always pleases my senses. Since I was young, I always marveled at how canned food resembled dog food when opening, and that we still ate it, and knowing that it always looks much better once heated into your other items, went about my cooking business.I have tried this as a standalone soup out of the can with Naan, bread, and other misc dippers and it stands alone well. I found, in my experience, that adding about 1/4 can of coconut milk to it makes it a much more satisfying soup dish and thins it out a bit more to be more friendly on the palate. My preferred method of devouring this however, is over some Tandoori Rice, which you can now buy individual packs that work great from Tasty Bites, and makes the perfect 90 second lunch. I like to add in some onion, zucchini, mushrooms, and if feeling carnivorous that day, some spiced chicken or pork. The base flavors and texture of this product mix well with pretty much any veggie or meat, so add or take away to taste and experiment for yourself.The potato dumpling are good on their own, but to me netiher make or break the dish. If going the soup route, make a nice addition away from the constant "broth", by itself on rice adds a focus to "get on your fork" each time you plunge in, but with adding other veggies and meats to it, they tend to get lost or broken up to the point they lose relevance in the dish. They do carry a Tator Totish look to them but are more chewy and flaky kil a Gnocchi that flakes instead of a solid lump. Adding a few tots to it certainly would not distract from the dish, and it is yours so do whatever the heck you want, I am not your Momma!If you enjoy Indian Food, like aromatically rich foods, experimenting on flavors, or want to enjoy something healthier and more exciting than the ol' PBJ in the lunchbox for as much preperation time, you really cannot go wrong. Unless you try it and hate it, then you went wrong, and I am sorry. But if you are not going to finish that...
