Recent User Experience

I would take off one star because unless you are warned or lucky, you can't get these open. But I'm warning you! They are canned in Chile, and after a few batches I can say it was not a freak event that the rims are too thin for what most people consider a normal opener to work. The milk is great. It's the only sweetened condensed milk I can find where there isn't a harder layer on the bottom that the silicone scraper can't dent, and I have to break up with a metal fork. It makes a good dulche de leche, and is necessary to coconut kisses (a 2-ingredient cookie) and no-bake cheesecake (just made some this morning). But when we got them, our normal opener, that unfastens the rim, did nothing--no connection. The hand-held rotary opener, that cuts inside the rim, couldn't get a grip. Neither could our straight-from-the-1970s electric rotary can opener. The only way we could get in was the opener on a Swiss Army knife, that you punch in and slowly lever around the edge. That was rough going. This is the principle of the original can opener. When the rotary was introduced in the early Thirties, it was called The Miracle Opener, it's so much less work (that's from an ad in a period magazine). We found, here on Amazon, a pack of two wooden-handled devices we call the halberds, with a steel loop for leverage on the rim, and a big blade. You still pound the point through the lid then nibble along until you are nearly around. Then you save yourself work by just bending back the lid on what's left. It's the classic cartoon tin can.It can only be used right-handed, cutting counter-clockwise, because of the bevel on the blade (husband is southpaw). The workout is for your left arm, holding down the can. Do not try to get through in big cuts: it goes wrong fast. Nibble, and tilt it a bit to the right (tip from Thirties magazine). Is it worth it? Check your budget and decide. We still buy them.
