Let me preface this, I am not Japanese. I am a white chick born and raised in a Hispanic community, I have no idea what constitutes a "good" mochi from a "bad" one. So let me just say this:Every mochi comes wrapped individually, to preserve its freshness. Upon opening, the mochi is pillowy soft and fluffy. The surface is smooth like baby powder, not encumbered by any outer toppings like sesame seeds or what have you. Biting in, there is a tender flavorful center, not unlike the outer texture, yet slightly deeper and richer, heartier, but still smooth like velvet. It is an uncomplicated treat, sweet and soft and delightful.My mother compares the texture to snot, so if you're of that ilk, you're not going to like it. But if your sensibilities are delicate enough so that you can appreciate a symbiosis of soft texture, a light sweetness enveloping a subtle savory center, then you'll probably enjoy them even more than I do. Om nom!
